In Fighting Over Dumb Stuff, a relatable episode of Be Transformed: New Life Awaits, we hear how seemingly minor issues—like how a U-Haul is packed or when to wrap a gift—can spark major conflict. But the real issue isn’t the event. It’s the heart behind the reaction.
Romans 8 teaches that when we live by the Spirit, we are no longer governed by the flesh. That means we don’t have to react out of fear, control, or pride. We can pause, listen, and respond with peace. But that pause doesn’t come naturally—it’s the fruit of a transformed heart.
The Spirit of Life gives us perspective. What feels like a level 10 offense may actually be a level 2 moment. When we’re living in the flesh, our reactions are often disproportionate because they’re driven by deeper, unresolved heart issues—like feeling unseen, unappreciated, or out of control. The argument isn’t really about the U-Haul or the wrapping paper. It’s about what those things represent to us.
When we surrender our need to be right or in control, we make space for love, humility, and connection. The Spirit helps us see the person in front of us—not just the problem. He reminds us that peace is more valuable than being right, and that unity is more important than winning an argument.
This kind of transformation doesn’t happen overnight. It happens as we consistently choose to live by the Spirit, allowing Him to reveal what’s really going on in our hearts. And as we do, we begin to experience a new kind of freedom—freedom from reactivity, from defensiveness, and from the need to control every outcome.
The next time you feel yourself escalating over something small, pause and ask: “What’s really going on in my heart right now?” That question, asked in the presence of the Spirit, can change everything.
Listen to Fighting Over Dumb Stuff and ask the Spirit to reveal what’s really going on in your heart.
